Viral Hepatitis Vaccines

Key Messages

HAV⁽²⁾ and HBV⁽²⁾ vaccination should be given to:

  • men who have sex with men
  • patients with underlying liver disease
  • patients with HIV infection

HBV⁽²⁾ vaccination should also be given to patients with chronic renal disease including those on hemodialysis.

HAV⁽²⁾ vaccine is given at 0 and 6 months.

HBV⁽²⁾ vaccine is given at 0, 1 and 6 months.

  • Require a double dose of HBV⁽²⁾ vaccine to enhance immunogenicity.
  • Hepatitis B surface antigen titers should be checked after completion of vaccination series and if they are below 10, a repeat vaccine series should be performed.
