General Information

Encapsulated, lancet-shaped, gram-positive diplococci.

Normal flora and important cause of invasive disease. Direct person-to-person contact via respiratory droplet.

Often pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) preventable.

  • Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP)
  • Bacteremia
  • Meningitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Otitis media

Rarely:

  • Endocarditis
  • MSK
