General Information

Non-fermenting, aerobic gram-negative bacillus.

Ubiquitous, water-associated pathogen, easily selected for by the administration of non-antipseudomonal antimicrobials.

Common in hospital environment.

May be a colonizer of diseased airways and other sites.

Important pathogen of generally nosocomial infections including:

  • UTI
  • Pneumonia - HAP/VAP
  • CNS
  • Intra-abdominal infections
  • Bacteremia
  • Vascular catheter infection
  • Burns/wound infection
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Others

May require contact +/- droplet precautions if highly resistant.

Use multiplex PCR, gene sequencing to identify resistance mechanisms.
