General Information

Aerobic, gram-negative rod.

Human/animal reservoir.

Contaminated food and water; often travel-related.

Occurs in outbreaks (e.g. daycare).

Symptoms usually start 1-2 days after infection and last 7 days.

Increased MDR to TMP/SMX, Ciprofloxacin, and Azithromycin.

  • Infectious colitis - dysenteric

  • HUS (Hemolytic-uremic syndrome)

  • Reactive arthritis

  • Bacteremia

  • Intra-abdominal abscess

Most require treatment.

Food handlers require proof of clearance before return to work.
