General Information

Intracellular gram-negative.

Common sexually transmitted disease; most common among young people.

Chlamydia is known as a "silent" infection because most infected people are asymptomatic and lack abnormal physical examination findings.

  • Urethritis

  • Cervicitis

  • Proctitis

  • Rectal infection

  • Trachoma

  • Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)

  • Pharyngitis

  • Pelvic inflammation disease (PID)

  • Ectopic pregnancy

  • Ophthalmia neonatorum

  • Neonatal pneumonia

Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) are the most sensitive tests.

Retesting to monitor for re-infection recommended every 3-12 months.
