Flagellated protozoan parasite, also known as G. duodenalis and G. intestinalis.
Transmission through ingestion of cysts in contaminated water, food or by the fecal-oral route.
Incubation of about 7 days, symptoms normally begin 1-3 weeks after becoming infected.
Diagnosis of multiple stool specimens increase test sensitivity.
PCR panel is the most sensitive and can be used to identify subtypes of Giardia.
