General Information

  • Tuberculosis

  • Urinary tract infectious disease

Monitor serum drug levels periodically to maintain blood levels <30 mcg/mL.

Monitor renal and liver functions periodically.

Obtain hematologic panels periodically.

Monitor closely for CNS toxicity in patients receiving total dialy dose >500 mg.

Assess neruospychiatric statust at least monthly.


  • Confusion

  • Dizziness

  • Headache

  • Somnolence


  • Seizure

Ethionamide- increased risk of seizures

Antimicrobial class: Antitubercular, d-alanine analog

Pregnancy category: C

Average serum half life: 10-25 hours


  • CNS toxicity may occur; discontinue if condition develops.

  • Discontinue if allergic dermatitis develops.

  • Chronic alcoholics have an increased risk for convulsions.

  • Contraindicated in patients with epilepsy, depression, severe anxiety, psychosis, severe renal insufficiency, and excessive use of alcohol.
