General Information

Infections caused by susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.

Perform renal, hepatic, and hematopoietic function tests, periodically during prolonged therapy.

Obtain susceptibility testing in patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.

  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis
  • Hypersensitivity reaction
  • Seizure
  • Valganciclovir- may result in CNS toxicity
  • Valproic acid- may result in decreased plasma concentration and loss of anticonvulsant effect
  • Theophylline- may result in toxicity
  • Cholera vaccine, live

Pregnancy category: C

Average serum half life: 1 hour

Unstable at alkaline or acidic pH, given parenterally.

Not suitable for outpatient prolonged infusion therapy.

Precautions:

  • Use not recommended in patients on hemodialysis unless benefit outweighs potential risk of seizures.
  • Renal impairment increases the risk for CNS adverse events. Children less than 30 kg with renal impairment is not recommended due to lack of data.
  • Administration in the absence of bacterial infection or prophylactic use increases the risk of drug-resistant bacteria.
  • Discontinue if allergic reactions or Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea is suspected or develops.
