Spectrum Of Activity

General Information

Pulmonary tuberculosis, adjunct.

First-line anti-tuberculous agent.

Obtain acid-fast bacilli smear and culture from sputum at least monthly until 2 consecutive culture specimens are negative.

Perform chest x-rays after 2-3 months of treatment and at end of treatment.

Obtain follow-up smears frequently until 2 consecutive specimens are negative.

Perform liver and renal function tests at baseline and periodically.

Perform visual acuity tests at baseline and periodically; monthly for patients receiving doses greater than 15 mg/kg/day.

Serious

  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Hypersensitivity reaction
  • Optic neuritis
  • Aluminum-containing antacids - separate by at least 4 hours
  • Delamanid
  • BCG vaccine, live

Antimicrobial class: Antitubercular

Pregnancy category: C

Average serum half life: 2.5-4 hours

Urine penetration: Therapeutic

CSF penetration: Poor

Precautions:

  • Decreased in visual acuity, possibly to optic neuritis; may be related to dose and treatment duration; close monitoring recommended.
  • Monitoring recommended for liver toxicities.
