Pregnancy: Compatible.

Breastfeeding: Compatible.

Therapy of Streptococcal, Enterococcal infections as well as susceptible gram negative infections.

Commonly used for respiratory tract infections and urinary tract infections.

Used as part of the preterm prelabour rupture of membranes (PPROM) protocol after 48 h of IV ampicillin and erythromycin administration.

  • Gastrointestinal side effects
  • Allergy/rash (immediate or delayed), cytopenias
    • Note EBV related rash
  • Contraindicated in patients with true penicillin allergies.
  • Amoxicillin shares a common structural side chain with cephalexin, therefore, there is an increased risk of allergy cross reactivity between these agents.
