General Information

Fermenting gram-negative rod, of the Enterobacterales family

  • UTI
  • Nasty pneumonias (Friedlanders disease)
  • Liver abscesses
  • Hospital acquired pneumonia
  •  Intra-abdominal and biliary infection
  •  Prosthetic material and vascular catheter infection

May require contact precautions if highly resistant i.e. ESBL or CRE (carbapenem resistant)

Treatment of choice for serious infections with ESBL strains is a carbapenem.
