Antitoxin Antibiotics

General Information

Nonpurulent (Streptococcal) cellulitis, necrotizing infections (cellulitis, fasciitis, Fournier's gangrene, pneumonia), and Streptococcal toxic shock syndromes can benefit from toxin inhibition by these adjunctive antibiotics. Clinical improvement is often shortened and length of hospitalization can be shortened.

Anti-toxin Antibiotic agents include:

  • Clindamycin (50S ribosomal subunit inhibition)
  • Linezolid (30S ribosomal synthesis inhibitor)
  • Rifampin (inhibits DNA-dependent RNA polymerase)

There is evidence to suggest that even though a pathogen may demonstrate resistance on the susceptibilities, the anti-toxin activity can still have significant clinical effect.
