Putting on (Donning) PPE
1 - Hand Hygiene
A. Using an alcohol-based hand rub is the preferred way to clean your hands.
B. Use soap and water if hands are visibly soiled
2 - Gown
A. Make sure the gown covers from neck to knees to wrist.
B. Tie at the back of neck and waist.
3a - Procedure / surgical mask
NSHA and IWK now require universal masking for healthcare workers who are working in patient care areas.
The same mask can be used with a full face shield for droplet / contact precautions
Discard the mask if it becomes contaminated with splash or spray (visibly soiled), makes direct contact with a patient, or it becomes so moist that it no longer feels intact.
If a full face shield is not available, and a mask with a built-in face shield attached is used, then your procedure mask should be stored correctly before donning PPE and re-donned after removing PPE and cleaning hands.
Secure ties or ear loops around head or ears so the mask stays in place.
Fit the moldable band to the nose bridge. Fit snugly to face over mouth and nose and below chin.
3b - N95 Respirator (if required due to AGMP)
N95 respirators must be ‘fit tested’ prior to use.
Pre-stretch both top and bottom straps before placing the respirator on your face
Cup the N95 respirator in your hand
Position the N95 respirator under your chin with the nose piece up. Secure the elastic band around your head so the N95 respirator stays in place
Use both hands to mold the metal band of the N95 respirator around the bridge of your nose
Perform a ‘seal check’ with each use.
4 - Eye protection or face shields
Place over the eyes or face, then adjust to fit
Eyeglasses are not considered protective eyewear
5 - Gloves
Pull the cuffs of the gloves over the cuffs of the gown.
