General Information

Anaerobic spore forming gram positive bacilli, box-car shaped

  • Diarrhea often starts after taking antibiotics. Chemotherapy and malignancy also increase risk
  • Can occur in outbreaks
  • Recurrence is very common therefore previous history of C. difficile is a risk factor
  • Antacids, especially proton-pump inhibitors, may increase risk
  • Profuse, watery diarrhea: 3 or more bowel movements per day
  • Pseudomembranous colitis or toxic megacolon.

Do NOT perform test of cure, since test can remain positive even after cure
