General Information

Small Gram-negative coccobacillus.

  • Normal respiratory flora
  • Invasive disease sharply declined after Hib conjugate vaccine widely used, especially in children <5yrs old
  • Most invasive disease is now caused by non-typeable strains

Colonizer of the upper respiratory tract but can cause invasive disease including:

  • Pneumonia/empyema
  • COPD exacerbation
  • Bacteremia (post-splenectomy)
  • Epiglottitis
  • Meningitis
  • Droplet precautions if presentation is epiglottitis.
  • Asplenic patients at risk of invasive infection
