More severe infections in asplenic patients (anatomic or functional), alcoholics, and immunosuppressed patients.
Promptly identify splenectomized (functional or anatomic), alcoholic patients, and immunosuppressed patients with animal bites who require prophylaxis (Amoxicillin-clavulanate x 5 days) and close monitoring for sepsis
~1/3 patients with bacteremia will have a rash that can progress to purpura fulminans
Consider tetanus and rabies immunization/prophylaxis
