General Information

Aerobic gram negative rod, encapsulated

Infected animal bite. Normal flora of canines.

Other species of Capnocytophaga colonize human mouths.

  • Animal bites
  • Skin/soft tissue infection
  • Necrotizing Fasciitis
  • Bacteremia
  • Meningitis
  • More severe infections in asplenic patients (anatomic or functional), alcoholics, and immunosuppressed patients.
  • Promptly identify splenectomized (functional or anatomic), alcoholic patients, and immunosuppressed patients with animal bites who require prophylaxis (Amoxicillin-clavulanate x 5 days) and close monitoring for sepsis
  • ~1/3 patients with bacteremia will have a rash that can progress to purpura fulminans
  • Consider tetanus and rabies immunization/prophylaxis
