General Information

  • Non-fermenting Gram-negative rod, of the Enterobacteriaceae family
  • Indole negative

GI flora, especially in hospitalized patients.

  • Most commonly urinary tract infections
  • Intra-abdominal infections
  • Association with struvite stones and persistence within stones accounts for recurrent infection.

Proteus mirabilis is more susceptible to antimicrobials than Proteus vulgaris
