General Information

Aerobic Gram-positive bacilli

Usually causes infection in neonates, pregnant women, elderly, and immunocompromised patients.

Foodborne illness associated with deli meat, soft cheeses, unpasteurized milk, and others.

Often occurs in outbreaks.

  • Self-limited gastrointestinal illness with diarrhea
  • Meningitis
  • Rhombencephalitis
  • Bacteremia
  • Septic abortion/miscarriage/stillbirth

Infectious Disease consultation recommended to assist in evaluation/management.

Febrile gastroenteritis:

  • No treatment needed if immuncompetent
  • Pregnant patients, elderly, and immunocompromised patients: amoxicillin 500mg po tid x 3-5 days or TMP-SMX 1 DS tab po BID for 3-5 days.
