General Information

Supportive care.

If any one of following, give azithromycin 500mg PO q24h x 3 days:

  • bloody diarrhea
  • high fever
  • persistent symptoms (1 week)
  • immunocompromised

Motile, comma-shaped, Gram-negative bacilli

Transmission occurs by ingestion of contaminated food or water or by direct contact with fecal material from infected animals or people.

Diarrheal illness: usually self resolving.

Immunoreactive complications can occur:

  •  Guillain-Barre Syndrome
  •  Reactive arthritis

Treatment may shorten the duration of illness by 1 day.
