Dosing

Caution should be used in patients with renal impairmentCrCl < 10Hemodialysis4 mg/kg IV once daily x 21 days4 mg/kg IV q24-36h4 mg/kg IV q48h (give dialysis day dose after dialysis)

300 mg in 6 mL sterile water by aerosol every 4 weeks. Administered by Respiratory Therapy in negative pressure room.

General Information

Alternative option to first line therapies for:

  • IV formulation: treatment of Pneumocystis pneumonia (Pneumocystis jirovecii)

  • Aerosolized: prophylaxis of Pneumocystis pneumonia (Pneumocystis jirovecii)

  • Infusion: CBC, electrolytes, extended electrolytes, creatinine, liver enzymes, glucose, QTC, BP during and after IV infusion

  • Parenteral: electrolyte abnormalities, cytopenia, renal injury, QTC prolongation, pancreatitis, hypotension (rapid administration)

  • Inhaled: bronchospasm/cough, especially in patients with a smoking or asthma history (an inhaled bronchodilator prior to pentamidine may ameliorate symptoms). Dizziness and fatigue.
