Gram-positive cocci in clusters, coagulase-negative

Skin colonizer

  • As these organisms colonize the skin, they can represent contaminants
  • However, they may be a real pathogen, particularly in nosocomial setting

Disease manifestations include infections of prosthetic materials including:

  • Prosthetic valve endocarditis
  • Vascular catheter infections
  • Prosthetic joints
  • Implantable cardiac devices

Staphylococcus saphrophyticus causes UTIs in young females

Staphylococcus lugdunensis acts similar to Staphylococcus aureus and is more virulent than other CoNS; this organism should be respected as a pathogen and NOT be routinely dismissed from the blood
