On November 28, 2022, the WHO recommended a new name for monkeypox (mpox)

Both names will be used simultaneously for one year while “monkeypox” is phased out

Treatment

Severe Illness:

  • Hemorrhagic disease
  • Confluent lesions
  • Sepsis
  • Encephalitis, or
  • Requiring hospitalization

Risk of Severe Illness:

  • Immune compromised
  • Pediatric patients younger than 8 years old
  • Pregnant, or
  • Breastfeeding women

Complicated Infections:

  • Involves eyes, mouth, genitals, or anus
