General Information

Broad gram negative coverage including Pseudomonas, generally used for nosocomial infections including post-neurosurgical meningitis, or other infections based on susceptibilities.

Notable lack of gram positive activity versus other cephalosporins.

Allergy (immediate and delayed). Note potential cross-reactivity with aztreonam based on side chain.

Neurotoxicity: High ceftazidime levels in patients with renal insufficiency can lead to seizures, nonconvulsive status epilepticus, encephalopathy, coma, asterixis, myoclonia, and neuromuscular excitability. Adjust dosage based on renal function.

May be associated with increased INR, especially in nutritionally deficient patients, prolonged treatment, hepatic or renal disease
