Dosing

General Information

Preferred agent for MSSA infections.

Skin and soft tissue infection (e.g. cellulitis).

Urinary tract infections.

Endovascular infections.

Bone and joint infections.

Surgical prophylaxis.

Susceptible Staphylococcal, Streptococcal and gram negative infections.

  • Hypersensitivity rash
  • Eosinophilia
  • Renal dysfunction (elevated SCr, BUN)
  • Neutropenia
  • N/V/D
  • C. difficile colitis
  • Positive Coombs’ test (without hemolytic anemia)

Probenecid: prolonged half-life. Drug interaction has been used therapeutically to give once daily cefazolin.

Not recommended unless no other alternatives.

Antimicrobial class: 1st Generation Cephalosporin

Parameters associated with efficacy: Time dependent, associated with time free drug concentration (fT) > minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).

Average serum half life: 2 hours

Urine penetration: Therapeutic

CSF penetration: Poor
