Asymptomatic Bacteriuria

Asymptomatic Bacteriuria

Inclusion Criteria

Positive urine cultures in the absence of signs and symptoms:

  • Dysuria
  • Frequency
  • Urgency
  • Suprapubic pain
  • Fever
  • The elderly may only display mental status changes

Recommendation

Do NOT treat with antibiotics

  • Exceptions: pregnancy, pre-urologic procedure, post renal transplant, neutropenia
  • Antibiotics do not decrease asymptomatic bacteriuria or prevent the development of UTI
