Susceptibilities

General Information

  • Cefepime

  • Ciprofloxacin

  • SMX/TMP

Aerobic, gram-negative rod

  • Humans/animals are the reservoir (i.e. reptiles - turtles/lizards, transovarial transmission in chickens->eggs)

  • Fecal-oral transmission or ingestion of contaminated water/food

  • Food-borne illness

  • Infectious colitis

  • Intra-abdominal abscess

  • Bacteremia and endovascular infection

  • Bone/joint infections

  • Antimicrobial therapy should only be considered for complicated infection (e.g. bacteremia, high fever, hospitalized, >8 stools per day) or for groups at increased risk of invasive infection:
    • Neonates (up to 3 months old)
    • Persons >50 years old with atherosclerosis
    • Immunosuppressed
    • Cardiac disease (valvular or endovascular), or
    • Significant joint disease
  • Administer corrective IV fluids and electrolytes as appropriate
