AmpC Organisms
General Susceptibility

General Susceptibility

  • Cefepime
  • Carbapenems
  • Fluoroquinolones
  • Aminoglycosides
  • This organism may express an inducible beta-lactamase (AmpC) which can cause failure of penicillins, beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors, 1st-3rd generation cephalosporins, aztreonam, and ertapenem, despite in vitro susceptibility
  • Using beta-lactams other than cefepime or meropenem (i.e. ceftriaxone), when reported as susceptible, is likely reasonable for simple infections requiring short duration
