Meningitis, Acute Bacterial

  • Cerebrospinal fluid should be sent for the following investigations in all patients with suspected acute bacterial meningitis: CSF cell count and differential, protein, glucose, Gram stain and culture.

  • Blood cultures x 2 sets should be collected in all patients with suspected acute bacterial meningitis.

  • In cases of subacute or chronic meningitis, strongly consider Infectious Diseases and Neurology consultations to guide further investigations and mangement.
