General Information

Gram negative diplococci.

Neisseria meningitidis can be isolated from the CSF, blood and less commonly, other sterile sites, including synovial fluid or pericardial fluid.

Isolation of Neisseria meningitidis is generally of little significance when cultured from nonsterile sites such as the oropharynx (can be normal flora).

  • Meningitis
  • Meningococcemia
  • Pneumonia
  • Septic arthritis
  • Pericarditis
  • Conjunctivitis

Contact and droplet precautions until 24hrs of appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Prophylaxis may be required for close contacts and healthcare workers.
