General Information

Fungus - Yeast

Candida spp. are normally found in the gastrointestinal tract and skin. Isolation of these organisms from the sputum or urine often reflects colonization.

However, Candida spp. do have the potential for invasive infections in immunocompromised hosts and hospitalized patients. In addition, Candida spp. can also result in mucocutaneous disease.

Isolation of Candida from the blood or sterile site should never be considered a contaminant. Infectious Diseases consultation is strongly recommended for all patients with candidemia or invasive Candida infections.
