Chronic Hepatitis B

Chronic Hepatitis B

Clinical Considerations

Diagnosis of Chronic HBV infection is based upon persistence of HBsAg >6 months

Initial lab tests include:

  • CBC
  • Alkaline phosphatase
  • Albumin
  • AST/ALT
  • PT/INR
  • Tests for viral replication (HBeAg, anti-Hbe, HBV DNA)
  • Rule out co-infection with Hepatitis C and HIV
  • If dual infection with HIV, consult Infectious Disease specialist

Screen for hepatocellular carcinoma with imaging (e.g. ultrasound)
