Dosing

General Information

Uncomplicated cystitis

  • Do NOT use to treat pyelonephritis, as nitrofurantoin does NOT reach adequate concentrations in the renal parenchyma
  • Signs and symptoms of pulmonary reaction and neuropathy
  • Periodic CBC, LFTs, renal function tests with prolonged use
  • Interstitial pneumonitis and fibrosis especially with prolonged use
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • GI upset

Antacids decrease absorption.

Contraindicated in patients with anuria, oliguria, or significant impairment of renal function.

Do NOT use for treatment of infections outside of the lower urinary tract - nitrofurantoin does not reach adequate concentrations outside of the urine.
