Clinical Considerations

If antibiotics are ordered post-operatively, the last dose should be given < 24 hours from surgery end

Limiting the duration of antimicrobial prophylaxis as a single dose preoperative dose can reduce the risk of C. difficile disease

  • Adult half life in normal renal function: 0.7-1.1 hrs
  • Redosing interval: 2 hrs

OR

  • Adult half life in normal renal function: 1.2-2.2 hrs
  • Redosing interval: 4 hrs

  • Adult half life in normal renal function: 6-8 hrs
  • Redosing interval: N/A

Beta-lactam Allergy Alternative

  • Adult half life in normal renal function: 6-8 hrs
  • Redosing interval: N/A

  • Redosing interval: N/A due to the significant post-antibiotic effect
