Dosing

2 gm IV q8h (max 6 gm/day)

1g IV daily given post-HD on dialysis days.

For serious infections consider 2g IV daily.

Other regimens exist.

General Information

Skin and soft tissue infection (e.g. cellulitis)

Surgical prophylaxis

Susceptible Staphylococcal, Streptococcal and gram negative infections

Allergy (immediate or delayed)

Can cause positive Coombs, cytopenias, and hepatic and renal laboratory abnormalities

Probenecid - prolonged half-life. Drug interaction has been used therapeutically to give once daily cefazolin.

Not recommended unless no other alternatives.
