Clinical Considerations

This is an ophthalmic emergency due to risk of visual loss and posterior extension to the cavernous sinus (with possible thrombosis and death)

Urgent Ophthalmology and ENT review (if sinus surgery may be required)

Anaerobic coverage is needed for patients who had chronic sinusitis and odontogenic source; also consider anaerobic coverage until CNS involvement has been excluded
