Dosing

General Information

  • Broad gram negative coverage including Pseudomonas, generally used for nosocomial infections including post-neurosurgical meningitis, or other infections based on susceptibilities.
  • Notable lack of gram positive activity versus other cephalosporins.
  • Renal function
  • Phlebitis at infusion sites
  • Diarrhea
  • C. difficile colitis
  • Allergic reactions (immediate or delayed)
  • Drug fever
  • Cytopenias
  • Interstitial nephritis
  • Hepatitis
  • CNS: seizures (increased risk with high dose and renal failure)
  • Chloramphenicol (Systemic) - May diminish the therapeutic effect of ceftazadime.
  • Sodium Picosulfate - Antibiotics may diminish the therapeutic effect of Sodium Picosulfate.
    • Consider using an alternative product for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy.
  • Warfarin - anticoagulation effect may be enhanced.
