Bacterial Meningitis (Adult)

Diagnostics

  • Headache

  • Fever

  • Altered mental status

  • Stiff neck

  • Glasgow Coma scale <14

  • Vomiting

  • Seizures

Once there is suspicion of acute bacterial meningitis:

  • Collect 2 sets of blood cultures (ideally prior to antibiotic therapy)
  • Head CT scan before lumbar puncture (LP) if indicated
  • Lumbar puncture
