Fermenting gram negative rod, of the Enterobacteriaceae family

Normal GI flora

  • UTI
  • Can cause nosocomial infections similar to Klebsiella pneumoniae.
  • There is evidence that this organism may cause colitis associated with antimicrobial use.

Treatment of choice for ESBL strains is a carbapenem
