General Information

Uncomplicated cystitis in females with normal renal function.

DO NOT use for pyelonephritis or bacteremia as insufficient systemic drug levels.

  • Interstitial pneumonitis and fibrosis especially with prolonged use
  • DO NOT use during labor or in third trimester
  • Peripheral neuropathy

Antacids decrease absorption.

Think of this drug as a urinary antiseptic.

Not recommended in males due to inadequate tissue penetration, especially with possible occult prostatitis.

Per Automatic Substitution Policy: Substituted Nitrofurantoin 50 mg PO QID with MacroBID 100 mg PO BID.
