General Information

In general, aminoglycosides are used in combination with a β-lactam antibiotic and are not used as monotherapy in the treatment of infections other than cystitis or pyelonephritis.

  • Renal function

  • Auditory exam with prolonged therapy

  • Therapeutic drug monitoring

  • Nephrotoxicity

  • Ototoxicity

  • Neuromuscular blockade (avoid in patients with myasthenia gravis)

  • Distribution: Distributes to extracellular fluid, including serum, abscesses, ascitic, pericardial, pleural, synovial, lymphatic, and peritoneal fluids; poor penetration into CSF, eye, bone, prostate; Vd 0.2-0.3L/kg

  • Protein binding: <30%

  • Half-life elimination: 2-3 hours

  • Excretion: Urine, 90-95% within 24 hours
