Routine Practices

Diagnostic Considerations

  • Acute mastoiditis is a clinical diagnosis. Use of mastoid and/or cerebral CT or MRI can help in confirming diagnosis and assessing for complications
  • ENT consultation recommended. Aspiration and drainage of the middle ear may be helpful early in the disease process for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes
  • If tympanic membrane is perforated or middle ear drainage occurs, middle ear pus should be sent for culture
