Cephalexin PO - Empiric Uses

Empiric Uses

  • Cutaneous Abscesses, Furuncles, Carbuncles, and Boils, Moderate, with or without cellulitis: PO (outpatient)

  • Impetigo:

    • Moderate-Severe: PO cephalexin

  • Cellulitis Without Drainable Abscess:

    • Infants and children: Mild (outpatients): PO: Cephalexin

  • Periorbital Cellulitis: Traumatic, Mild

  • Cervical Adenitis: Mild to Moderate

  • Osteomyelitis (acute): Child, alternative Po stepdown option

  • Puncture wound of foot (no sneakers): Cephalexin

  • Urinary Tract Infection: Infants & older children, (for uncomplicated UTI in children ≥2 months of age)

  • Cephalexin and Ciprofloxacin do not cover Enterococcus spp.
