Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia

Routine Practices

Criteria for VAP:

  • Intubated >2 calendar days
  • New, worsening or persistent infiltrate, consolidation, or cavitation on chest xray compatible with pneumonia
  • Abnormal temperature (<36°C or >38°C) with no other cause, OR abnormal WBC (<4 or >12x109 /mL)
  • New onset purulent sputum, or change in character of sputum, or increase in respiratory secretions or increase in suctioning requirements
  • Worsening gas exchange (ie. Increasing FiO2, worsening PaO2/FiO2 ratio, increasing minute ventilation)

7 days, assuming a good clinical response to treatment
