Routine Practices

General Information

Facultatively anaerobic lactose-fermenting Gram-negative bacillus of the Enterobacterales order.

Naturally found in the environment (water, soil). Does not usually colonize healthy individuals, but patients in health care institutions may become transient carriers.

Global distribution. Transmission from direct contact with contaminated fomites (e.g. medical devices, intravenous solutions, etc). and person-to-person spread.

Nosocomial infections including:

  • Hospital-acquired pneumonia
  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infections
  • Wound infections
  • Central-line associated bloodstream infections
