General Information

Facultative anaerobic non-lactose fermenting Gram-negative bacillus of the Enterobacterales order.

Naturally found in the environment (soil, water, sewage) and the human gastrointestinal tract of most healthy individuals.

Global distribution. Transmission by endogenous invasion, person-to-person contact, or contact with contaminated environment.

Community-acquired infections:

  • Urinary tract infection
  • Wound infections
  • Bloodstream infection

Nosocomial infections:

  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infection
  • Central-line associated bloodstream infections
