Facultative anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus of the Enterobacterales order.
Normally found in the nasopharyngeal (1-20%), gastrointestinal (5-75%), and skin flora of healthy individuals and animals. Occasionally found in the environment.
Global distribution, with increasing fecal carriage identified in the summer months. Transmission by ingestion of contaminated material, person-to-person contact, or contact with environment.
