Routine Practices

General Information

Strict aerobic Gram-negative short bacillus or coccobacillus.

Naturally found in the environment (i.e. soil, water). Survives on inanimate objects for weeks. Can colonize the skin, GI tract, respiratory tract, and genital tract in 2 to 20% of healthy individuals.

Global distribution. Predisposition to humid climates. Commonly found in healthcare facilities, war-afflicted zones, and after natural disasters.

Nosocomial infections in compromised patients including:

  • Ventilator-associated pneumonia
  • Central-line associated bloodstream infections
  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infections
  • Surgical site infections

Less common community-acquired infections including:

  • Trauma-related soft tissue infections
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
