Note: Azithromycin is not the preferred macrolide for inpatients

Due to the long half-life of azithromycin, it commonly induces resistance to colonizing organisms including Streptococcus pneumonia

Use clarithromycin for Mycoplasma pneumonia, unless there are significant drug interactions (e.g. tacrolimus, cyclosporine)

Azithromycin IV is Non-Formulary

Formulary alternatives for Mycoplasma coverage include fluoroquinolones, IV levofloxacin or ciprofloxacin are preferred
