Spectrum of Activity

General Information

  • Ventilator-associated pneumonia:

    • Infants & children: (Piperacillin-tazobactam + Tobramycin)
  • Pneumonia in an Immunocompromised Host: Piperacillin-Tazobactam ± TMP-SMX* (for PCP)

  • Aspiration Pneumonia:

    • Older children (If Pseudomonas aeruginosa suspected or severe disease): Piperacillin-Tazobactam
  • Other immunocompromised patients (eg, solid organ transplant, autoimmune disorders): Piperacillin-Tazobactam + Vancomycin

EAP (injection)

Allergy/rash (immediate or delayed), cytopenias - esp. thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, interstitial nephritis, abnormal liver enzymes

  • Serum electrolytes, bleeding time especially in patients with renal impairment
  • Periodic tests of renal, hepatic, and hematologic function
  • Observe for changes in bowel frequency, CBC with differential
  • Monitor for signs of anaphylaxis during first dose
  • Possible Alternative Therapy: Ciprofloxacin, ceftazidime, meropenem
  • Piperacillin/Tazobactam does not cross the blood-brain barrier and should not be used if meningitis is suspected
